Weekend Getaway: Lake Como and Milan, Italy

After we returned from Greece on a Wednesday, we found out that the following Monday was a holiday in Switzerland and Alexis didn’t have to work. We planned a last minute trip to Lake Como and Milan, Italy. This time we rented a car and took Diego and Valentina with us. The journey shouldn’t take more than 4 hours, but it took us 6. First, the GPS failed us and we got lost. Then, we drove through the mountains instead of the freeway, because again, we had no option than trusting the GPS and finally we encountered a car collision that kept us stuck for 45 minutes on a tunnel. But, at the end it was all worth it. We chose Varenna instead of the touristy Bellagio. We found an amazing pet friendly apartment through Airbnb. It was not luxurious but it was cheap and centrally located, only 1 minute by foot from the lake. The food in Lake Como was delicious and inexpensive and the views of the lake are breathtaking. I was super excited because this was going to be the first time Alexis and I were in Italy together.

After 2 nights in Lake Como, we headed to Milan where we visited the Duomo and did a little bit of shopping. I have to say we were very disappointed with the food in Milan. So if you know of any good restaurants, I accept recommendations for the next time we visit, which it will hopefully be soon since we were not able to see Da Vinci’s “Last Supper” because we arrived late on Sunday (they were closed) and they don’t open on Mondays. We learned that we also need to make reservations and buy tickets in advance, otherwise there is very little chances to see this masterpiece. It was incredibly hot, so we basically spent the time indoors or eating gelato.
